Okay sorry I didn’t get the column out yesterday but I’ve been running waaay behind trying to get the details worked out for the last minute show we’re running at Tremont Music Hall next week. For those of you who don’t know it’s a DIY Showcase that will take place entirely in the bar room using our SND sidestage. It’s a cheap show ($5) and there is no surcharge. There will also be drink specials so be sure to come party with us at the show next Thursday the 16th.
In the meantime, let’s take a look at this week’s shows. Since I’m a little pressed for time I’ll try to mention as many shows as I can and we’ll get back to detailed analysis next week. Okay here we go!
This week Tremont Music Hall had David Allan Coe but had to postpone it till November. So this weekend they have Deas Vail and Amy Broome on Friday the 1oth and Matt Hires, Wakey Wakey and Brandon Kirkley & The Firecrackers on Saturday September 11th. Both these shows are all ages. Check out Tremont Music Hall’s website for times and prices.
This week at the Milestone Club, they are probably still hung over from the Gun Club Weekend / Appalucia Fest this past weekend but will get no time to recover as they will host the Houstons w/ Sin Ropas and Father Murphy on Thursday the 9th, Valient Thorr brings their trippy/ metal/ cosmic sound to the Ghetto Fortress on Friday the 10th along with Junius, Howl and 2013 Wolves. One of my former label mates Harvey Milk return to the Milestone on Saturday the 11th along with Grids and Hex Machine. All of the above shows are 18+. Check out the Milestone Club website for more details.
Over at Snug Harbor you’ll be able to check out Andre Williams & The Goldstars w/ the Troublewalkers on Saturday September 11th and Dexter Romweber Duo w/ Temperance League on Sunday the 12th. Btw, has anyone noticed Snug Harbor has a new website? It’s built using tumblr and contains a ton of videos of upcoming artist!
I would like to mention that Amos Southend will be hosting Woofstock on Saturday September 11th. This is the second annual Woofstock and is presented by the Great Dane Friends of Ruff Love and Blue Ridge Boxer Rescue. This is an excellent event featuring all kinds of fun people and animal related activities so bring your dog and come on out to the event. If you don’t have a dog, come out anyway and look at some of the wonderful dogs that I’m sure will be up for adoption. I love boxers and great danes and think this is a great cause so go by and check it out! It runs from 11am till 4pm and features fun for the whole family!
Sunday night brings the one and only Public Enemy to Amos Southend w/ Fucked Up, The Banned and Crew Grrl Order. Say what you want about Flavor Flav selling out to the highest bidder but Chuck D has never backed down from his never ending fight against ignorance and hatred and the bad part is that anthems like “Fight the Power” and “Bring the Noise” are just as relevant now as they were then. And that’s sad when you think about it…. In any case, if you can afford the steep ticket price ($35) go check out some hip hop pioneers that are still going strong!
Btw, for all you indie fans out there, The Pixies are playing Ovens Auditorium tonight, September 9th, and it promises to be a great show filled with rarities and b-sides! If you’re going send me a review! It should be an awesome show!
Also for those who don’t know, tickets go on sale this Friday for NOFX and the Bouncing Souls at the Fillmore in Charlotte, NC! This show is scheduled for February 4th, which happens to be a Friday night! Tickets are $25 plus surcharges. This is gonna be one huge party!! I’m already stoked and it’s still several months away!
Anyway, that’s all for this week! I’ll be back next week with more previews of shows!! Come hang out with us on September 16th at Tremont Music Hall! We’ll see you then!
Thanks for the support!

Hey what’s happening people?? Personally I’m wishing this week would hurry up and get out of the way so we can get to the 4th of July holiday that’s coming up this weekend! I know a bunch of people are packing up and heading to Heavy Rebel up in Winston Salem this weekend and to all of you I hope you have a safe trip!! Don’t know what Heavy Rebel is? Check it out at heavyrebel.net!
Also I’m glad a certain Charlotte area band made it back okay after an insane middle of the night wreck on their way back from tour! I can’t say which band but let me say that it sounded like some scary times and I’m glad you guys made it back!
Oh, in case you missed it, we announced Punk Rock Picnic 3 earlier this week! I haven’t dropped the details but trust me, they will be coming soon! Our annual party was a blast last year at Tremont Music Hall and I expect this years will be just as fun! For the uninitiated, it’s a 2 stage extravaganza with about 8 bands and free food grilled out by Summer of Meat! I can’t wait!!
But now it’s time to get on to the music that is taking place this 4th of July weekend!!
Tremont Music Hall ( which has a new website created by me!!) has a busy weekend coming up! First up on Thursday July 1st they host Andy the Doorbum w/ Cryptorchid Chipmunk, Candy Jerk and For Disaster. Andy is one of my all time favorite Charlotte performers and this is a rare Tremont appearance for him so you should be sure to check it out! Also of note on this show is Cryptorchid Chipmunk, these guys sound like they took a hit off the Mr. Bungle pipe while listening to ska. It’s an all out assault that I can’t even begin to describe! You’ll just have to be there to see for your selves! Doors for this one are at 8pm and admission is $6 with a $3 surcharge for under 21.
Friday night July 2nd at Tremont will be a night of ska and punk featuring Dr. DP & The Trainrunners, Taj Motel Trio and Bracing for Impact! Dr. DP and the Trainrunners recently won the UNCA battle of the bands and are a great ska/ reggae tinged group that features former members of 20 past 4 and Andy & The Jivers. I will also mention there are rumors that the band may be taking some time off so see them while you can! Georgia’s Taj Motel Trio are a favorite of mine and some great guys. They bring the ska mixed in with some catchy punk hooks and are a great crowd favorite! Bracing for Impact are a great SC band that play gritty garage punk with heavy doses of rock. This will be a really fun way to kick off your holiday weekend! Doors are at 8pm and admission is $7 plus a $3 surcharge for under 21. And this one is definitely all ages!
Saturday night Tremont is hosting the first ever Southend Comedy Show! This showcase features comedians Greg Martinez , Ryan Vangenderan, Steve Forrest and Andy Sandford and is hosted by the Elder Statesman! Doors are at 8pm and admission is $6 with a $3 surcharge for under 21 and this show is 18+ only!
Across town at the Visulite Theater on Saturday night July 3rd is a great reggae show with Bums Lie, Kings of Belmont, Roots Essential and Jah Sun Rising. I love Bums Lie, they have probably the smoothest ska/ reggae sound I’ve ever heard from a local band and put on some great shows! The fact that we get the Roots Essential on the same show is just a bonus! I did a show with these guys earlier this year at the now defunct Elwood’s Music Hall and they seriously get down with a traditional dub sound. This is definitely a show promoting One Love! And couldn’t we use that now days… Doors are at 9 and admission is $5 in advance and $7 day of the show!
Over at Amos Southend on July 2nd The Lights Fluorescent continue their farewell tour. That’s right, unfortunately one of the most critically loved bands in the city is packing it up and they will be missed. They are known for their amazing live performances but sadly it will be no more very soon. They will be missed. Also on this show are young up and comers Lyra Shines and Carson, who is probably not named after Carson Daly… Doors open at 8pm and admission is $8 for over 21 and a $3 surcharge for under 21. This show is all ages.
Last but not least Sunday is the 4th of July and that can mean only one thing, The Penguin is having their annual Pig Picking!! This show features the rockabilly stomp of the Truckstop Preachers along with the Flat Tires and Parodi Kings and mixes it with the newer school stylings of Andy the Doorbum and Appalucia. These annual shindigs are awesome and always great fun! Plus it’s free! The food, beer, bbq and bands starts promptly at 5pm so show up and bring your appetite!
Well that’s it for this week! Have a happy and safe 4th! I’ll be back next week with news about the third annual Punk Rock Picnic as well as more previews of local shows! Btw, in case you want a preview of who is gonna be at Punk Rock Picnic, I should be at the Tremont show on Friday night checking out Taj Motel Trio! If you find me and ask me you’ll get the scoop before anyone else does!! See you at the show!!
Thanks for the support!

Okay November is moving right along and Snug is still standing after Ramonesfest. Now that the dust has settled from that, let’s move on to look at more upcoming local shows on this episode of “Next Week”!
The Milestone Club- Mike Hale (Gun Moll) Chris Wollard (Hot Water Music) and the Ship Thieves, KP Soloman 5000 11/11/09- Okay this is an interesting concept and I don’t know if they set it up like this or not, but this show features a lot of people who are famous for being in other bands. This is like “Solo project Night” at the Milestone. KP Soloman is of course, known for plucking the bass in 25 Minutes to Go, what you may not know is that he also has an acoustic side underneath all that. Course, you probably do know that because the Soloman has been burning up the bar circuit lately with his personal, intimate style of songwriting. Mike Hale is the singer/guitar player for Gunmoll but his solo stuff is exactly the opposite of the loud rock band. Intricate acoustic picking and introspective lyrics, sung with a husky voice makes for a mellow mood. Chris Wollard of Hot Water Music fame has banded together a bunch of his Gainesville buddies and are touring as Chris Wollard & The Ship Thieves. If you are coming expecting a roaring, loud rock show ala Hot Water Music you’re in for a surprise. This project is surprisingly folky, intimate and almost indie sound. This should be a fun night to watch guys who are normally loud and proud get all acoustic and emotional. Admission is $7 and doors are at 8pm.

Double Negative play the Milestone Club 11/13/09!
The Milestone Club- Double Negative, Grids, Moenda, Brain Flannel 11/13/09- Whatever I said about the previous show, this show is just the opposite. Not that these guys don’t have emotion to there singing it’s just angrier emotions. Double Negative last played with Fucked Up I believe and that show was damn near a riot. Expect no less this time. Raleigh’s Double Negative play a high tempo, full speed ahead music that will blow your mind. To put it mildly, Double Negative kick a lot of ass. High speed riffs with screaming, distorted vocals played with a wide open abandon that few bands achieve. It’s face melting to say the least. Grids are a Charlotte rock/ indie/ hardcore band that communicate via heavy riffs and clever (when you can make them out) lyrics. Slower paced than Double Negative ( that’s most bands btw) they still manage to have a heavy, reverbed almost ominous sound. Moenda is a Charlotte band featuring Davey Blackburn of Calabi Yai. Their sound is more like avant garde jazz noise meets relentless distortion. Not really my thing but at one time I would have loved it. It’s really gonna depend on how into John Zorn you are… Also playing is Brain Flannel, which features members of Logic Problem, Yardwork and Grids. Tickets are $6 for over 21 and $8 for under and doors are at 8pm.
The Milestone Club actually has two more shows that I wanted to squeeze in the column this week. Saturday 11/14 the Milestone welcomes the Lights Fluorescent, one of Charlotte’s premier indie rock acts featuring the amazing Erika Blatnik. Also on the bill are Hallelujah the Hills, Yep Roc records Drink Up Buttercup and The Lesser Pauls, whose PJ Harvey meets Sonic Youth meets Jefferson Airplane sound have me paying attention. On Sunday 11/15 the ‘Stone welcomes a night of heavier than hell music featuring the infamous Black Cobra, Black Tusk, Charlotte’s own heavier than your four piece duo, MACHETE! and psychedelic rock outfit Chylde. Should be a heavy way to start the week. Talk about a Monday morning hangover!
Btw, I wanted to mention that Rodi in Gastonia is 13 years old this month. Hard to believe that Rodi has been open for 13 years but it’s true and we wanted to pass along our congratulations to them! For the uninitiated Rodi offers up great food and free live shows for the acoustic minded. It’s an eating experience that is unique in the area and never fails to make a great, memorable night. For more info go to www.rodiworld.com!
I also wanted to give a brief mention to two shows coming up this week at Amos Southend. First off, it’s all tight pants and eyeliners on Tuesday the 10th as Amos welcomes Boys Like Girls w/ Cobra Starship, The Maine, A Rocket to the Moon and Versa Emerge. This show is all ages (if it wasn’t there might not be anyone there!) and it’s $25 in advance and $28 day of show. Doors open at 6pm. It’s just the opposite on Saturday the 13th when Amos welcome Hatebreed w/ Unearth, Canibal Corpse, Hate Eternal and Born of Osiris. Jesus, I’ve seen Hatebreed and Canibal Corpse before and this show will be the heavy death metal jam from hell. If you don’t love violence stay away from the pit at this show because it will be fast and violent for sure. This show is 16 & over tickets are $20 in advance and $23 at the door and doors open at 7pm.
Snug Harbor- Dynamite Brothers, Babyshaker, Satan’s Youth Ministers 11/14/09- Somebody at Snug Harbor are secret soul fans and I love it. First Chain & The Gang and now the Dynamite Brothers. This guy have an organ to grind and harmonies to spare. This Chapel

Dynamite Brothers and Babyshaker 11/14/09
Hill party band get it all right with soulful vocals, singing about their love of women with a back breaking beat and great bass lines that will get your booty shaking. I don’t know where all these soul bands are coming from but you’ll get no complaints from me. These guys remind me of Three Dog Night and that’s a compliment! Babyshaker may not have as much soul but they definitely bring down the house with the swagger of lead singer Scott Weaver. Glam, rock, punk songs about whatever ails them is what to expect from these guys. And anyone who can last past the infamous 10 year mark definitely gets my respect! Satan’s Youth Ministers get my award for “name of the week”! This Alabama band specializes in psychedelic, garage rock with a nod of r&b. That’s all good as well. Noisy and fun these guys are a great way to start the party. It’ll be a fun night at Snug Harbor for sure.
Snug Harbor- The Dirt Daubers, Appalucia 11/15/09- The Dirt Daubers are Colonel JD Wilkes of the Legendary Shack Shakers with his wife Jessica and “Slow” Layne Hendrickson. They hail from Western Kentucky and play an ecclectic mix of Appalachian, ragtime and hot jazz standards and original music. That pretty much makes them a match made in heaven for Charlotte’s own Appalucia. This Corey Ziggler/ Andy the Doorbum project are also disciples of the Appalachian sound and this show will go great with a mega dose of moonshine!
Well that’s it for this edition of “Next Week” ! If you guys hear about a show and want to pass it along to us, send me an email! Bands keep the flyers coming! We’ll see you next time! Thanks!
