Next Thursday, September 16th at Tremont Music Hall Stillnotdead.com will be hosting a DIY Showcase featuring Biggy Stardust & His Wretched Hive, The Not Likelys, The Division Red and Squall in the Tremont Bar Room! This show will mark the return of the SND Sidestage meaning that the bands will be performing in your face instead of up on a stage! Admission will be just $5 with no surcharge and the doors open at 8pm! Start your weekend early with Stillnotdead.com!!
Man how time flies! I can’t believe it’s already August! That means we’re less than two weeks away from Punk Rock Picnic 3! Jeez, I’ve got a lot of work to do to get that show ready but you guys don’t have to worry about that, all you have to do is show up! In the meantime let’s take a look at what’s going on in local music!
This Friday August 6th The Milestone Club welcomes Guttermouth, The New Threat, South Side Punx and The Not Likelys. Huntington Beach CA’s Guttermouth blast out high energy, melodic punk rock with clever, humorious lyrics. It’s rare they come through the area so be sure to get out and check out these guys! The New Threat are from Florida and have been around since 2003. These guys play it just like it should be, loud and fast with barely a break from the sonic assault. Also on the bill are local kings of street punk, South Side Punx and excellent working class punks, The Not Likelys. This is a great show with a couple of great touring bands and a good representation of Charlotte’s own local punks, check it out if at all possible! Doors are at 8pm and admission is $13 for over 21 and $15 for under.
Sunday August 8th the Milestone Club will welcome Whatever Brains, Yardwork and Brain Flannel. Charlotte’s own Brain Flannel have a slight punk influence but with an ear shredding love of distortion, although the second song on their myspace seems to remind me of the Minute Men a little…Yardwork on the other hand takes much more of an indie-pop direction with their music. The melodic pop reminds me a little of the Flaming Lips, which is a definite compliment in my book. Although the Flaming Lips singer would never scream out the lyrics with the wild abandon of Yardwork. I definitely dig it and hope to catch them live soon! Raleigh’s Whatever Brains seems to fit perfectly between the sound of Brain Flannel and Yardwork, on one hand they are poppy and catchy but on the other they are distorted and fast as hell. Should be a great show, even if it’s guaranteed to make you late for work the next day! Doors are at 8pm and admission is $6 for over 21 and $8 for under.
Over at Tremont Music Hall I forgot to mention a show last week so I will take the time to mention it now. If you haven’t made plans for tonight and you like music heavy enough to loosen the bolts in the cars in the parking lot then amble over to Tremont Music Hall for the bowel shaking sounds of Black Cobra, Howl, Struck by Lightning and Machete! This show will probably set off the richter scale so don’t be worried if they report seismic activity in Charlotte tonight. Of course, it’s always possible with the power of Black Cobra and Machete in the same place it may warp the fabrics of reality and bring about the end of the world for real. If that’s the case it’s better to be at ground zero ( The site of the cataclysm, not the club in Spartanburg!) so head on out to Tremont and hold on for dear life! Doors are at 8pm and admission is $10 in advance, $12 dos with a $3 surcharge for under 21!
On a completely different note, Tremont Music Hall is having an 80’s hair metal revival next Tuesday August 10th as they welcome Faster Pussycat with
L.A. Guns and John Corabi ( formerly of Motley Crue). I have to admit I grew up in the 80’s surrounded by metal and punk. I actually had the first cd by sleazy Los Angeles rockers Faster Pussycat. It was a fun guilty pleasure and occasionally it still is. I was never into L.A. Guns though, even though my wife assures me that they are awesome. I’ve never heard of John Corabi, but I assume he was one of the fill in singers from Motley Crue. Basically I think it’s all good to wax nostalgic for one night and rock out with some 80’s metal/ hard rock. So put on your spandex ( just kidding, please dont!) and tease your hair and head on out to Tremont Music Hall. Doors are at 8pm and admission is $15 in advance and $18 dos with $3 surcharge for under 21.
I would also like to mention the benefit for Charles Inman that is taking place at Snug Harbor tonight. From what I hear Charles was injured in a car crash and Snug decided to throw a benefit to help with the medical bills. The lineup is stellar! It features Charlotte glam punk band Babyshaker, the sleazy sounds of the Troublewalkers and the rockabilly, greaser rock riot of the Belmont Playboys. The doors open at 8pm and the show starts at 9pm, which is early by Snug standards. Cover is $5 and goes to a good cause so get on out and rock out for a cause!
Also if you’re in the mood for rockabilly, head up to Puckett’s Farm Equipment Saturday night August 7th to check out the Bo-Stevens. These guys play some wonderful rockabilly/ western swing and would be a treat to watch in the “Bob’s Country Bunker” type confines of Puckett’s. I suspect the show will start around 9pm and cover will be $5.
Well that’s it for this week, I’ve got to get back to work getting Punk Rock Picnic 3 ready to blast off next week! Hope to see you guys at the show! Until then have fun and we’ll see you next week!
Thanks for the support,
Ryan Dead
Hey what’s up? Sorry I missed my deadline yesterday but I at least got up a flyer for the Queers show that took place at Milestone last night! Hope everyone that went to that show had a blast and hopefully someone will send something in talking about that show!
I would also like to announce that in addition to the big shows I announced last week, Stillnotdead.com is also presenting local surf rock legends the Aqualads at Tremont Music Hall on Saturday August 7th!! I’ll have more details very soon! In the meantime let’s move on and check out the action this week in Charlotte music!!
Let’s face it, we all love the Milestone Club! Whether you met your future wife there ( like I did!), used to run it ( also me…) or just saw your favorite band there, we all have special memories attached to that place. That’s the very reason you should come out Friday night June 25th for the Thought Criminals present: A Benefit for the Milestone! This show features the live hip hop explosion known as the Thought Criminals (who I’ve heard are nothing to fuck with!!), Ty Bru- a hip hop act from Asheboro with a really smooth flow. Also on the show is the Reunion of former Salisbury band Perfo, who moved to Chicago but are coming back to Charlotte for one show only!! As if all that wasn’t enough, opening the show is Dinner, which is comprised of some of the former members of beloved Charlotte shock punk band Planet Piss! Plus I noticed on the Milestone website that the show is a beach party and everyone is expected to wear swim trunks or at least bring beach balls! It’s been my experience that beach balls turn an ordinary show into a game of dodge ball and that is highly encouraged! Doors are at 8pm and admission is $6 for over 21 and $8 for under!
Now I hope you don’t get all partied out Friday night because Saturday night June 26th is a Stillnotdead kind of party as Stillnotdead.com presents: South Side Punx w/ Gore Gore Luchadores, The Not Likelys, Sick Sick Sick and LARF! It’s been a while since we’ve partied with the South Side Punx so we’re really looking forward to this show! I’ve heard they’ve been working on a new record so everyone be sure to show up and scream along to the favorites as well as the new jams! Also for those who have never seen it, Gore Gore Luchadores aren’t a band, it’s a bunch of girls in mexican wrestling masks and bikinis throwing down in a kiddie pool full of blood! If you haven’t seen it, you owe it to yourself to check out this spectacle! Also on the card are Sick Sick Sick, a longstanding punk band that have been around since back when I was in a band! Also on the show is LARF, a Florida band that sounds heavily influenced by the Queers and a long list of other Lookout Records bands and trust me that’s a big compliment! The doors for this show are at 8pm and admission is $6 for over 21 and $8 for under! Unfortunately this one is 18+ only!!
Meanwhile over at Tremont Music Hall they also have a great show this weekend! Friday night the 25th Charlotte’s excellent hip hop scene continues it’s track record of awesome shows with Quantum Foundry, Mr. Invisible and Potter’s Field Emcees. Quantum Foundry are a two man and an Ipod band that bring awesome flows over well constructed beats and are a local favorite. Mr. Invisible are 2 emcees and a dj who bring impressively fast rhyming and lyrics over atmospheric jams and beats. Plus they aren’t just working the local scene! I saw on Facebook that they recently got back from a stint in L.A.! Big things may be afoot for this Charlotte trio! I would buy the record, this guys are currently high on my list of favorite bands! Also on the show is Potter’s Field Emcees, who don’t have much information about their group on their page but I did manage to check out a song on their page that is very reminiscent of a Tribe Called Quest and that is pure awesome! Doors are at 8pm and admission is $7 for over 21 and $10 for under!
If the Stillnotdead show at Milestone isn’t your speed, then head out Saturday night June 26th to the Visulite for a more laid back evening as the Visulite host Moonshine Racers with special guests, The Old Invention. Moonshine Racers describe their music as “progressive y’allternative”, whatever that means. I’m guessing that they tend to run in the bluegrass/ americana vein from their influences. Openers The Old Invention are strictly bluegrass however! And I mean strictly traditional bluegrass. These guys don’t even use any amps! I’ve seen them play before and although I would advise a little less banter between songs, the music is as authentic as it gets! Doors open at 9pm and the headliner starts at 11. Admission is $5 in advance and $7 day of the show and the show is 16+!
Well that’s it for this week! Tune in next week when I talk about some of the July 4th stuff going down and may reveal a flyer or two, you never can tell. We’re working on finalizing the lineup for Punk Rock Picnic 3 and as soon as I get it all together I’ll release the lineup! Trust me, I can’t wait!! Look for the logo coming soon!! Thanks for the support, come see me Saturday night! I’ll be hanging out at the Milestone Saturday night for the South Side Punx show!!
Thanks,
Ryan Dead
Holy crap! Summer is finally here!! Here we are on the eve of Memorial Day weekend, the official kick off of summer! Some local venues are going all out for this traditional party weekend while others are closing so they can hang out and relax. In any case, let’s take a look at what’s going on this weekend!
The Milestone Club will be hopping on Sunday May 30th as Stillnotdead presents: Stuck Lucky, Murdoch, The Not Likelys and Dr. DP & The Trainrunners. That’s right, we’re throwing a Memorial Day party and you are all invited!! Stuck Lucky are a great ska/punk/thrash band from Nashville, Tennessee that we’ve been trying to get down here for forever! They are also bring fellow Nashville melodic, hardcore band Murdoch with them! Rounding out the bill is Charlotte’s own The Not Likelys and winner of the UNCA battle of the bands, Dr. DP & The Trainrunners! Not a bad way to round out your Memorial Day holiday! Doors are at 8pm and admission is $6 for over 21 and $8 for under!
Also since I’m gonna be away next week, I wanted to mention the GBH show at Tremont next Wednesday, June 2nd. It will feature the legendary British punk band GBH with local Charlotte legends Antiseen and up and coming band, Outernational. The buzz on this show is huge and with Outernational added a few weeks ago the buzz got even louder. Be sure to check this show out!! And if anyone wants to send me a review or pics I would love it!!
Of course Memorial Day weekend means that Snug Harbor are throwing their annual Snug 600 in honor of the race that’s in town this weekend. It’s not a bad lineup at all this year either! Friday night you get Pinche Gringo, Jeremiah and the Howling Owls, North Elementary and The Activity. Saturday night you get Husky, Hectagons and the Lesser Pauls and finally Sunday you get the main event with Dex Romweber Duo, The Flat Tires, The Poontanglers, Bout It Boyz and Dirtbag Love Affair. That’s one heck of a weekend for music! Be advised these shows start early by Snug standards so plan accordingly. Friday night starts at 9pm , Saturday at 10pm and Sunday at 8pm. Admission is $5 on Friday and Saturday night and $7 for Sunday night.
Well that’s it for this week! I’ll have a special guest writer next week so be sure to tune in and check out what they have to say! Who is it? I’m not telling, you’ll have to tune in and find out! I will tell you they are sure to have a unique opinion on things! Enjoy yourselves this weekend and have a happy Memorial Day! I’ll see you guys when I get back!!
Thanks for the support,
Ryan Dead
What’s up? I’m fighting a killer sinus infection myself so I’m gonna keep this one short and to the point. Just cause I’m feeling under the weather doesn’t mean you have to let it bring you down! Get out to the shows and enjoy some music!
Tomorrow night 5/6/10, the Milestone Club has Captured by Robots w/ Fat Camp and Pinko. If you have to ask what all that’s about you probably don’t need to go to the show. It’s a bizarre night featuring the animatronic chaos of Captured by Robots. While Fat Camp and Pinko feature equally bizarre lyrics. Anytime sodomizing unicorns is mentioned it isn’t hard to figure out what kind of show it will be! Admission is $8.00 in advance and $10 for over 21 at the door and $12 for under 21 at the door.
Also next Tuesday 5/11/10 The Milestone Club will welcome psychobilly groups The Koffin Kats and The Go Devils. I really like the Go Devils, who are from Asheville, NC. I saw them open for Tommy Ray & The Rayguns last year and really thought they were hot. Fans of Nekromantix or Tiger Army should find reasons to dig these guys! Same can be said for the Koffin Kats, even though I’ve never seen them live. I dig the couple tracks I’ve checked out and if you are into that type of music, you will too! Admission is $7 for over 21 and $9 for under 21.
If you’re into hook filled, catchy pop with a punky edge to it, then head on out to Tremont Music Hall this Friday night 5/7/10 for Rekless Youth w/ special guests Plan-C and Oh Yeah. These kids are one of the tighter live outfits in Charlotte right now and have garnered a lot of critical acclaim for their “Love Me, Hate Me” cd. I happen to be a big fan of the title track, which is one of the catchiest songs to come out of Charlotte in awhile! Doors are at 8pm and admission is $6 for over and $9 for under.
Also at Tremont this Sunday 5/9/10 we’re throwing a ska/ punk show with local Skacore kings IED, The Not Likelys, Jojo Taterhead Revival and touring band A Billion Ernies. The show is $7 bucks, all ages and no surcharge for under 21 just like all the SND shows at Tremont. Doors are at 8pm, so show up and rock out this Sunday at Tremont!
You might as well camp out at Tremont because the very next day, 5/10/10 Tremont welcomes Big D & The Kids Table with UNCA battle of the band award winners Dr DP & The Trainrunners! This should be a really fun ska show with both these outstanding bands! Skank the night away and ruin your Tuesday work/ school day! Doors are at 8pm and admission is $10 in advance and $12 at the door with a $3 surcharge for under 21.
Saturday night is looking like partly cloudy with a chance of Satan at SK Net Cafe as they welcome Rapegoat w/ Foundries, Orson Welles and Gambit. Rapegoat is pretty much like the flyer looks, heavy and full of Satan. They hail from over near Shelby and trust me, I wouldn’t want to get caught out in those woods! The doors are at 8pm and the show is $5 and 21+ only. Judging from the flyer I would say, no kidding…
Also this Saturday Elwood’s Music Hall welcomes the Aqualads w/ Parodi Kings! The Aqualads are Charlotte’s only surf rock band with a full arsenal of surf riffs and rumbling guitars to help you hang ten, even this far from the water. The Parodi Kings will be familiar looking openers as this band features Mike Hendrix of the Belmont Playboys and Jeff Clayton and the Mongrels and Mookie Brill who has played in just about every band at one time or another. Surf’s up in South Charlotte! Doors are at 8pm and admission is $6 in advance and $8 at the door!
Well that’s it for this week! Come back for our next edition when I will be sending out some birthday wishes and talking about more great shows coming to the area!
Thanks for the support!

Ok, so I’m running a day late for the column, it happens. SND central is a busy place! I’m actually getting ready to debut a new blog as a part of my new design site for SND Designs. I’ll put a post when I get the new site up and running for all of you to check out! The new blog will cover more of the design side and personal stuff in my life. Hope you guys will join me over there as well as continue to come to the Stillnotdead blog! In any case, it’s time to talk about music!
The Milestone Club- Uzuhi, Outernational, The Lesserpauls, Studio Gangsters and Razorkat- 3/25/10- I’ve heard that last time Uzuhi played Milestone it was a blast. From listening to their music on myspace it seems like it would be. These guys are a 4 piece punk rock band out of New York with a decidedly asian flair. Their music finds interesting ways to work in the Japanese influence and I dig it! Outernational was produced by Tom Morello of Rage Against The Machine and have been garnering glowing reviews ever since then. They’ve been dubbed the “next big thing” and they’ve been compared to the Clash. Glowing reviews, can they live up to it? I would definitely say yes! The groove they get on in the song “In Their Sights” is more infectious than anything I’ve heard recently. The willingness to cross genres definitely make them refreshing and they also definitely have the swagger and snarl that would remind you of the Clash. Awesome stuff indeed… The Lesserpauls are a great Charlotte band that are definitely on my list of favorite bands. They have a style that veers between Sonic Youth and even older bands like Jefferson Airplane. Vocalist Kenni Falls has a PJ Harvey flair to her vocals that’s unlike anything else in the Charlotte scene. Studio Gangsters are the odd band out with their tongue in cheek hip hop and sadly this is also the final show for opening band Razorkat. Razorkat made their Charlotte debut at the ill fated Cracksoup and played a series of high profile gigs including Stillnotdead’s only show at Snug Harbor and our Punk Rock Picnic 2 at Tremont last year. Now they are going their separate ways due to possibly differences of opinion within the band. Guess it’s true it’s better to burn out than fade away. Doors are at 8pm and admission is $7 for over 21 and $9 for under.
Elwood’s Music Hall- Bums Lie, The Roots Essential, Among Criminals and Dr. DP & The Trainrunners- 3/26/10- Come down and check out this awesome reggae/ ska show at Elwood’s Music Hall. Bums Lie are probably the most well known reggae/ska band in Charlotte and have played a ton of Stillnotdead shows. You’ll find it hard not to move your feet as they play some of the most smooth grooves in the Charlotte area. The Roots Essential will be more familiar to most of you by their former name, Satta Tribe. These guys recently changed their name but the music hasn’t changed. Think reggae in more of a traditional/ dub style. Slower traditional grooves with tripped out delay on the vocals will make for an intense set of reggae grooves. Among Criminals are all over the place. This Philadelphia band blend reggae, Clash style rock, a pinch of punk and a ton of percussion. Heady stuff for sure, on their myspace you can hear everything from reggae to indie rock. Dr. DP & The Trainrunners is a Asheville based ska/ reggae band that features Andy of Andy & The Jivers. They are bound to get the night off to a great start. Admission is $6 for over 21 and $8 for under. Doors open around 7:30. Plus if you come out early grab some great food as Elwood’s is known for great bbq, sandwiches, chicken wings and more. Although I think for this show we should rename it Elwood’s Dance Hall!!
The Milestone Club- Stillnotdead.com presents: Charlotte vs. Raleigh w/ The Rogue Nations, The Not Likelys and Thieves 3/27/10- This is what happens when you invite some Raleigh bands down and put them with some of Charlotte’s best punk bands. This show features Charlotte veterans The Rogue Nations, which features members and former members of Obstruction, the Poontanglers and My So-Called Band. With socially conscious lyrics and a bombastic sonic attack The Rogue Nations continue in the tradition of kick ass bands led by the energetic Chris Peigler. In the meantime the Not Likelys blast out working class punk rock with tinges of ska and even a country riff occasionally. It’s been said that these guys are what Rancid would sound like if they hadn’t started sucking. That’s a pretty good assessment in my opinion. Sing along choruses will keep the kids rocking, when they aren’t blasting each other in the pit. Thieves will have to hold down the Raleigh end of the show all by themselves due to Already Dead breaking up. That’s okay from listening to them I think they can handle it. These guys are insane hardcore, think Corrosion of Conformity playing Minor Threat songs. That’s about how it runs. There may only be 3 bands on the show but the energy is gonna be insane. Doors are at 8pm and admission is $6 for over 21 and $8 for under.
Tremont Music Hall- Nashville Pussy, Green Jelly, Psychostick and 25 Minutes to Go 3/27/10- Nashville Pussy are a tongue in cheek, sometimes firebreathing rock and roll band that have been touring the earth forever. I saw them several times back in the 90’s, mostly opening for Reverend Horton Heat. They are a good time and blasting rock. Imagine if Motorhead allowed women in the band and you will get a basic idea of how it sounds. We all remember Green Jelly or as I still remember them Green Jello, before the lawsuit… These guys are a poor man’s version of GWAR. They seem to play waaay more for laughs though. You will probably most remember them for “Anarchy in Bedrock” and of course, “Three Little Pigs”. Honestly I’ve never seen a band that looks goofier than Psychostick. They list themselves as comedy/ metal/punk. I don’t know, not my thing but some people dig it. I don’t see anything wrong with comedy in music but when they so obviously play it up it can become irritating. In the midst of all this comedy is our own 25 Minutes to Go, who take their music very seriously. Sing along choruses and a very dynamic sound will blast this show off properly. Doors are at 8pm and admission is $12 in advance and $15 day of show with a $3 surcharge for under 21.

Charlotte vs. Raleigh 3/27/10 at the Milestone Club
We’re proud to announce our annual “VS.” show for this year will be “Charlotte vs. Raleigh” and will take place March 27th at the Milestone Club! Representing Raleigh will be Already Dead, who we’ve reviewed on here recently and Thieves, a kick ass hardcore band that call Raleigh home. Meanwhile representing Charlotte will be the awesome Rogue Nations, fronted by the legendary Chris Peigler, and the Not Likelys, a working class punk/ ska band that’s known for their intense live shows and sing along anthems!
It should be a lot of fun and we’re hoping you all come out and check out this awesome showcase of local music!
Btw, there was another band that offered to be on the show and then suddenly decided they weren’t available for that date. Boo to them! Double boo, since I could have put up flyers on Friday and waited because I was waiting to hear from them! Oh well, that’s how it goes.
Okay, so that last post was weird! I apologize for pulling the story but that’s how it goes. Guess we’re back to business as usual, but “usual” doesn’t really describe this week at all! Don’t know what I mean? Well let’s get it rolling and you’ll figure it out!

Over Mountain Men cd release 1/26/10 at Snug Harbor!
Snug Harbor- Overmountain Men CD Release Party 1/26/10- The whole town appears to be buzzing about the new release by the Overmountain Men, the new group featuring David Childers, Bob Crawford of the Avett Brothers, Bobby Childers of 2013 Wolves and Randy Saxon. I will tell you there is good reason for that. I’ve been working with the Overmountain Men since about August of last year, working on their newsletter and website. I’ve had their song “Someplace Along the River” stuck in my head for months. The music itself is catchy americana/ country/ rock kinda feel with David Childers unmistakable vocals. It’s an infectious combination and their CD “Glorious Day” is bound to be a hit. You really should make an effort to make it out to this special edition of “Country Tuesday” at Snug Harbor for the Overmountain Men as they have stated they will play a maximum of 1 show a month. Making it even more important to catch them while you can! The show is scheduled to start around 9pm and admission is $5 for over 21 and $7 for under 21!
Snug Harbor- Reverend Deadeye’s No Man Gospel Band, The Lesser Pauls, Moses Cherry & the Topless Gospel Choir, Perry Fowler 1/31/10- I’ve spoke on the good Reverend before, with his hilarious and obscene sermons. This time he comes with his “No Man Gospel Band”. It should be a hellfire and brimstone revival tent meeting at Snug Harbor and I don’t think it’s a coincidence that he always appears on a Sunday. On his myspace page it simply says ” Where I sit my ass is my church”. In other words get ready to get preached too! Also on the bill is the always awesome Lesser Pauls. These guys are my pick for best new Charlotte band. Their songs range from Sonic Youth influence to 60′ s garage with vocals that will remind you of PJ Harvey at times. Good stuff. Also on the mill are Moses Cherry & The Topless Gospel Choir and Perry Fowler, both of which I must apologize to for not going into more detail but myspace is currently having problems and I can’t access the music players. Sorry!!! In any case this is a great Sunday night show based on the two bands I’ve highlighted above so you should come out and hang. Work will forgive you the next morning!

Benefit for Haiti at the Milestone 1/28/10
The Milestone Club- Benefit for Haiti 1/28/10- As I announced yesterday a benefit for the people of Haiti has been put together over the last few days through the efforts of Ryan Sullivan, formerly of Tax Slave and Razorkat. This show will feature a whose who of local music including IED, the Not Likelys, South Side Punx, Rex 84, Machete and Psinglewide Psychics. The trick with the Psinglewide Psychics is that it’s an all star group featuring Ryan Sullivan on guitar, Kris from Razorkat on drums, Madison from Rekless Youth also on guitar, Phillip from the Milestone on bass and Jeff “Biggy Stardust” Williams “allegedly” on vocals. ( Sorry Jeff! Couldn’t resist!) Anyway this all star band will belt out a collection of punk and early rock staples and hopefully will be able to practice before the show. If not it should still be a lot of fun! Supposedly the show starts at 9pm but that seems kind of late for a show with so many bands so I would probably figure on it starting a little early. Anyway admission is $6 dollars but you should plan on donating a little more, it’s for a good cause!

The Slackers at the Visulite Theater 1/29/10!!
The Visulite Theater- The Slackers w/ Bums Lie 1/29/10- Last time the Slackers played it was one of the greatest shows I had been to all year so you can imagine my excitement when I found out they were coming back! That’s right the legendary Slackers have been at it for 15 years and show no signs of slowing down with their own unique brand of Jamaican fueled rock and roll. Their sound is hard to nail down but my opinion is that it’s a blend of reggae, soul and ska. Easy description would be ” I guarantee you if you come to this show it will be one of the most fun nights you’ve ever had!”. There that about sums it up! Bum’s Lie will open the party with their own QC version of ska and reggae. Be warned, don’t be late!! The doors open at 8pm and Bum’s Lie will start promptly at 9:30. The Slackers will go on at 10:30 according to the Visulite website and they are usually pretty prompt! Admission is $14 in advance and at the door!

Princess & The Criminals last show!!
SK Net Cafe- Princess & The Criminals, Jojo Tater Head Revival and the Not Likelys 1/30/10- Speaking of ska, here are three bands that are sure to have felt the influence of the Slackers! Princess & The Criminals are a Greenville SC ska punk band that if you are to believe the flyer are about to break up. Don’t know if that’s true or not but myspace is still on the fritz so I can’t confirm or deny the rumor. Jojo Taterhead Revival made a big impression on everyone at the Stillnotdead Punk Rock Picnic and has my vote for best new ska band. They of course rose from the ashes of DSS Crew and keep the same fun vibe but now with the ska turned waaay up! The Not Likelys have been consistently knocking audiences dead at Punk Rock Picnic and again at Throwdown Fest. Their brand of working class punk mixed with ska and a healthy level of intensity and stage presence always seems to work the crowd into a frenzy. Or maybe it’s the working class raging anthems. Either way the pit is usually on fire when these guys take the stage and SK Net may never be the same after this show! Show starts at 9:30 and it’s only $3!! What a bargain!!
Okay well that’s it for this weeks edition! I will actually be at 3 shows this week, which I think sets my record for most shows attended in one week! I will be at the Overmountain Men show on Tuesday, the Haiti Benefit on Thursday and the Slackers on Friday! I would love to be at the Not Likelys show on Saturday but I may be broke or dead tired by then but who knows. Try to catch me out at one of the shows! Take care and we’ll see you in the next addition of “Next Week”!
Thanks,
Ryan Dead

Benefit for Haiti 1/28/10 at the Milestone!
It’s been announced that there will be a benefit concert for Haiti next Thursday January 28th. The all star show will be held at the Milestone Club and will feature the bands IED, The Not Likelys, South Side Punx, Rex 84, Machete! and Psinglewide Psychics. Psinglewide Psychics is a one time all star group featuring Ryan Sullivan, Phillip Shive of the Milestone, Biggy Stardust, Madison of Rekless Youth and Kris Engler of Razorkat.
Admission will be $6 dollars and all proceeds will go to benefit “Doctors without Borders” in their relief efforts in Haiti.
Sorry, it’s been hectic around here and I’m running behind. But at least I’ve made it in before the holiday weekend! It’s my favorite time of the year so let’s jump right into it! It’s the Halloween edition of Next Week!!

Zombie attack!! Run!!
If you feel like making a road trip then Ground Zero is the place to begin your Halloween weekend in style. Well maybe not in style, you are at Ground Zero after all, but at least it’ll be interesting based on not only this lovely flyer you see to your left but also the band names. With names like “King Sized Killers and “Rapegoat”, these bands sound custom made for a Halloween show. Btw, Rapegoat features Angus Hung of the Dead Kings so show some love!

Say goodbye to Hickory....There ain't gonna be anything left!
Antiseen w/ 25 Minutes to Go and South Side Punx 10/31/09 @ Drips Coffee House in Hickory, NC- Antiseen singer Jeff Clayton is a Halloween fanatic, hell he’s the only person I know that has as big of an obsession with Godzilla as I do, so it seems appropriate that he and his band mates are called on to rock Halloween into Hickory, NC with style. Break out the barbed wire and get ready for a blood letting as the 25+ year veterans of “destructo-rock” take aim on demolishing Drips Coffee House and the rest of Hickory as well. Not that there may be much left after the openers get done. 25 Minutes to Go are a hard rocking, sing along chorus creating, “Bladow!” screaming outfit of fury and they’re bound to be even more stoked on this night! South Side Punx open the show, if you can believe that! You know how they roll. I’ve never seen a band so capable of getting an audience to go from zero to insane riot levels in the course of one intro to a song. I have to say this is a triple headlining show for the ages and should be a great way to bring in the holiday.

Skalloween 10/31/09 at the Visulite Theater!
Bums Lie & Stillnotdead present: Skalloween featuring Bums Lie, the Not Likelys, IED, Rekless Youth and Stamper 10/31/09 @ Visulite Theater- Bums Lie has been doing Skalloween for 4 years now and this year they invited Stillnotdead in to take part in the tradition! Every year Bums Lie pick a different cd to cover. Last year was “Blood Sugar Sex Magic” by the RHCP, this year it’s Green Day’s “Dookie”. The trick is they will be doing the entire album in a ska/ reggae style. It should be really interesting to see how they alter the songs to fit their style. In addition you get the see a plethora of Charlotte area punk bands. IED are the kings of socio political Ska-core, infusing political lyrics with reggae beats to make a revolution you can truly dance to! The Not Likelys have been described as what Rancid would sound like if they didn’t start sucking and if their pit at Punk Rock Picnic was any indication that’s not a bad description. I know they blast out anthems like few others in town. Rekless Youth are actually using this show as a cd release party for their new cd “Love Me Hate Me”. I haven’t heard it yet but Rekless Youth are known for their tight musicianship and catchy hooks so it should be a good treat to get on Halloween! So come on out, be sure to wear your costume and get ready to celebrate Halloween Stillnotdead style! We’ll see you there! Show starts at 8pm and it’s $10. 18+ only.
That’s it for this edition. I did want to mention two great shows coming up on November 4th and 5th and I’ll give and in depth look at them in the next edition. The first is November 4th at Tremont Music Hall and features Boston’s The Have Nots with Planet Piss, Darken the Sky and Doctor DP & The Trainrunners which features Andy from Andy & The Jivers. The second show is on November 5th at Tremont and features the Mangles, the Smokers and the Necrohippies. Both of those shows are all ages and should be a lot of fun. I’ll talk more about them in the next edition!
I hope everyone has a happy and safe Halloween! Hopefully we’ll see you at Skalloween! Till next time, take care!
